Like many topics in English, we have lots and lots of 'slang' words connected with money. I'm just taking about British English. If we include American English too, the number of words jumps even higher.

So lets start. We have....

General terms for money.

Cash

Readies

Bread

Dosh

Dough

Shrapnel - coins

Specific words for a specific amount

a quid - £1

a pony - £25

a monkey - £500

a grand - £1000

Fiver - a £5 note

Tenner - a £10 note

The word 'grand' can be multiplied too. So for example £5000, would be 'five grand'. The same goes for 'quid', so for example, £7, would be 'seven quid'. To be clear these two words are 'slang', but are everyday words.

There are also many words to describe someone who doesn't like to spend (much) money. Some of these words you may already be familiar with because they have other meanings, but they can all be connected to a person who likes to keep their cash....

Tight

Tight-fisted

Mean

Stingy

Frugal

Cheap

So that's it.....a 'short but sweet' blog about money and our love of money words.

In my next blog, I'll be looking at money idioms.

Until next time...
