It's time to talk about the weather! Well what do you expect, I'm English! A common assumption is that it rains a lot in England. I guess it does, but maybe not as much as you think.
I did a quick check on Google about the annual rainfall in London, compared to Warsaw and do you know what I discovered? London has annually about 1cm more rain a month than Warsaw. Not exactly a huge difference is it...….
But us Brits do love to talk about the weather. It's a national pastime. It's probably because it's so changeable. Summers in England are so unpredictable. Planning a BBQ in July or August? It's best to have a backup plan. A few umbrellas, maybe a gazebo on hand just in case!
One of the things I like about Poland is you have the correct weather for each season. Snow and freezing temperatures in the winter and hot weather in the summer. Although based on last winter and this summer, I'm beginning to have my doubts about the Polish weather too!
So why 'Lovely weather for ducks'? Add 'It's raining cats and dogs' and you got two phrases which mean it's raining a lot.
Hot, sunny weather can be called 'baking', 'roasting' or 'scorching'. Whilst bad weather is 'miserable' and heavy rain means it's 'pouring'. If grey clouds are visible than it's 'overcast', but hopefully they'll disappear and it will 'clear up' later. Light rain or 'drizzle' is common too. On cloudy days the sun will appear or 'come out' and disappear or 'go in' regularly. Changeable weather can mean 'patchy' rain, clouds or fog and finally, watch out for 'hail' if a storm comes!
So there you have it. I feel better now. It means I don't have to talk about the weather for at least another hour:) #nativespeaker, #nativewayblog, #weathervocab
