I've talked in an earlier blog about Polish food, but I definitely think that English desserts deserve their own blog too!
I was brought up in a home where there was always something homemade and sweet available. Sponge cakes, fruit crumbles, buns, tarts and trifles were common in our house. Maybe it explains why I've always had such a sweet tooth.
But for me, England has a great tradition for delicious desserts (or afters, as we called them). They also have some great names. Jam roly-poly, bread and butter pudding, spotted dick, pineapple upside-down cake for example.
Many of these desserts have custard served with them. A warm sauce made with eggs, cream, sugar, a little cornflower and vanilla. Confusingly, custard can also be used cold on a trifle. I recommend Googling these words and if you're feeling adventurous, try making some of them.
I know it's only July, but Christmas just isn't Christmas for me without Christmas pudding. A dried fruit dessert, steamed for hours and then set on fire with brandy if you're feeling dangerous, just before serving. Of course it's served with........ custard! It can also be served with brandy butter/cream. We regularly make one for Christmas. It's scrumptious!
Regular English desserts made in my Polish home include Victoria sponges, fruit crumbles and Bakewell tarts. I promise you, they're always popular with our guests.
So why not get on the internet and try something new. You may just discover your new favourite dessert!#nativespeaker, #foodvocab, #learnenglish
