A good. old-fashioned homophone could be your English language downfall, so beware! You're safe while you're talking, but it can all change when it comes to writing an email, report or social media post.

It's not just English language learners, native speakers can sometimes be caught out too.

If you're still not sure what I'm taking about, homophones are words which are pronounced the same as other words but have a different meaning and can be spelt differently too.

Example:-

Here/hear is an example. Which/witch one shall he pick? One or/ore/oar two/to/too? I/eye think option four/for/fore. Am I right/write?

Below are just a small example of some more homophones....

vain/vein

by/bye/buy

isle/aisle/I’ll

cue/queue

eight/ate

cereal/serial

bury/berry

flour/flower

root/route

hole/whole

higher/hire

mare/mayor

male/mail

night/knight

wear/where

flew/flu

sight/site

check/cheque

threw/through

die/dye

bare/bear

key/quay

So watch out and try not to be caught out by a pesky homophone. Just another example of the challenges you face when learning English.
